Australia: Introduces New AI Policy for Government

Starting September 1, 2024, the Australian government implemented a new policy to guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in public services. This policy, announced in August, aims to help the Australian Public Service (APS) harness the benefits of AI while ensuring it’s used safely and responsibly. Key goals include building public trust by increasing transparency, governance, and risk management, as well as encouraging a forward-thinking approach to adapting AI practices as technology and regulations evolve.

Some of the policy's key actions include:

  • Training public service staff on AI basics, tailored to their roles in areas like procurement, development, and deployment.

  • Publishing an AI adoption strategy, which will inform the public about how the government complies with the policy and measures the impact of AI systems.

  • Appointing responsible officials within organizations to oversee AI implementation and keep up with new developments.

The policy emphasizes principles such as protecting Australians from harm, managing AI risks proportionately, and ensuring that AI use is ethical, transparent, and understandable to the public.
